A friend just posted the first part of the following beautiful poem on my Facebook Page and I decided I needed to share it here as well. I was exposed to this piece during the final weekend of my Coach training. There was a lot of turmoil going on for me and I was at a place where I doubted my own sanity. A classmate and friend (Svenja) picked up on my state and gently approached me. I laid bare my soul, as she listened, also mentioning it was my birthday. She asked if she could give me a birthday gift and rummaged through her things. She “just happened” to have this entire poem on her and it was directly connected to where I was in that moment. She read it to me (I could not manage) and I cried through every line as it touched my heart. It was the right thing, at the right moment, delivered by the right person.
What moments have you experienced when you received such a gift?
Love After Love by Derek Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
